Demonstrators Destroy Properties In Malawi

Demonstrations to force chairperson of Malawi Electoral Commission Justice Dr Jane Ansah to resign have destroyed many properties in Lilongwe and Mzuzu cities.

They attacked Japanese embassy in the capital city Lilongwe and damaged some government properties In Mzuzu among others.

In Blantyre army and police barred the demonstrators from entering presidential drive.

President of Malawi Congress MCP president Dr Lazarous Chakwera, his vice Sidick Mia and vice president of UTM party Dr Micheal Usiparticipated in the demonstrations.

Speaking to the demonstrators Chakwera said he was pleased with the crowd of participants.

He said will continue being patient until the court makes judgment on the electoral case.

In his remarks Usi urged Ansah to step down saying Malawians are waiting with keen interest to see her quit.

Vice president of Human Rights Defenders Coalition Gift Trapence said will continuously Ansah to resign.

Trapence called upon the demonstrators to prevent violence because some people had stoned police officers who were providing security.

“Please respect police because they are here to protect us,” he said
