MPs Debate Corrupt Practices Amendment Bill

Members of Parliament have debated a corrupt practices amendment bill in the national assembly.

Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Samuel Tembenu presented the bill whose aim is to scrap from president the power of appointing director of Ant-corruption Bureau.

Tembenu said the amendment is a response to the outcry of Malawians that office of president was abusing ant-corruption Bureau.

“The bill recommends formation of public appointing committee comprising chiefs, faith leaders and the media among others that will select 3 of the applicants and the president will appoint one of them,” said Tembenu

In his remarks, spokesperson of Malawi Congress Party in the House Joseph Njovuyalema said involvement of the president is still worrisome.

Spokesperson of Peoples party in the house Kamlepo Kalua asked for assurance from the Minister on the implementation of the bill.

Leader of the House Kondwani Nankhumwa suspended the debate.
