Islamic Relief Malawi Launches 16 Days of Activism

As the country observes 16 Days of Activism, Islamic Relief Malawi has called on the Muslim community to fight against Gender Based Violence on women and young girls in Malawi.

The call has been made at Mpapa Full Primary School in the area of senior Group village Nsomba, Blantyre where Islamic Relief Malawi in collaboration with Young Achievers for Development YAD launched 16 Days of Activism.

Speaking to Radio Islam after the function, country Representative of Islamic Relief Malawi Sherifa Mai said women and young girls are the main victims of Gender Based Violence hence the need to respect their rights.

Mia said “Islam encourages respecting women in a society as such Muslims should take a leading role in curbing Violence in Malawi.”

She therefore called upon Islamic organizations and individuals to join Islamic Relief in civic educating the masses on how Gender Based Violence affects development of the country

Commenting, police in charge for Soche Police substation deputy commissioner Happy Mkandawire said many Gender Based Violence cases are not reported to police.

“This is because the perpetrators intimidate the victims or the latter do not know where to report such cases,” Mkandawire said.

He urged Malawians especially young girls and women to report to authorities in their area once they are victimized.

Executive director of Young Achievers for Development Jefferson Milanzi commended Islamic Relief Malawi for supporting the 16 days of activism this year.

“We promise to engage in interface meetings with chiefs, men, women and the youth in the area to discuss how best we can eradicate Gender Based Violence in the area,” Milanzi said.

The launch started with a big walk from Namame to Mpapa full primary school.

Students from various private and public schools in the area attended the function.
