Child dies, 96 treated as outpatients of Food Poisoning

A child has died, 96 treated as outpatients while one referred to Machinga District Hospital after eating food suspected to have poison in Machinga District.

Public Relations Officer for Liwonde Police, Sergeant Ngwashape Msume, said the incident happened on February 17 at Kambulaje Village, TA Mlomba

According to reports from Nsanama, many people from Kambulaje, Ndalo, Masinde, and Mpalume villages bought maize from a local seller at Ofesi Market on February 16

After eating nsima from the maize, many experienced severe vomiting and stomach pains leading to diarrhea.

According to Liwonde Police, the four year old child’s condition worsened after eating the food and was rushed to Mlomba Health Centre where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Samples of the suspected maize flour have been taken for further testing at a laboratory.
