Ministry, Councils sign 240 Million Dollars Climate Grant

Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture and local authorities sign a five year grant of 240 million Dollars aimed at improving resilience to water-related climate shocks in the country

The Regional Climate Resilience Program RCRP grant is presented under a new Malawi Government program to 28 qualifying district councils.

According to secretary for local government Richard Hara local authorities will receive funds commensurate to their Local Authorities Performance Assessment (LAPA) score.

RCRP Deputy Project Coordinator Flemmings Nyirenda disclosed that representation of the cheques to 28 qualifying district councils range from 70 million kwacha and higher to K100 million kwacha depending on councils.

He said this year they are disbursing 10 million Dollars for intergovernmental fiscal transport formula to build resilience communities to climate change

Reacting to the matter, Public Relations Officer for Department of Disaster Management Affairs Chipiliro Khamula said the development will greatly assist in reducing losses and damages that emanate from flood-related climate shocks
