MLS suspends demonstrations for Judicial Reforms Bills

Malawi Law Society (MLS) has suspended the planned demonstrations scheduled for today Thursday 12th September 2024.

MLS planned the demonstrations in order to press Minister of Justice to present to parliament the long awaited Judicial Reforms Bills.

The bills are meant to facilitate promotion, transparency, accountability and promoting financial and professional independence of the Judiciary.

But speaking at press briefing in Blantyre, MLS President, Patrick Mpaka, said considering the steps that have been made so far they decided to keep on hold the demonstrations in order to avoid disrupting of the cabinet processes.

“The society has also received the communication stressing the point that the cabinet committee will submit the bills to parliament before the end of the on-going session,” says Mpaka

The bills are designed to address issues concerning judicial service commission, appointments into judicial office, discipline and removal of judicial officers, management of complaints among others.
