Fistula survivors hail IHAM on Fistula repair Camp

Fistula survivors have hailed Islamic Health Association of Malawi (IHAM) for organizing a one week fistula repair camp at John Chilembwe district hospital in Phalombe

One survivor, Martha Sherif, mother of four from Manase Blantyre has been suffering from Fistula since 2005

She feels relieved to have been assisted saying has been living a lonely life because was ashamed to mingle with her fellow women due to the condition.

“Women are suffering in silence and end up losing their marriages for failing to seek medical attention,” Sherif

She has therefore requested other women living with the treatable condition to get help.

In his remarks, IHAM executive director, Hajj Dyton, says a lot of women have showed up for the repairs.

Dyton says a team of local and international doctors at the camp has so far assisted 13 women from Tuesday and is hopeful that more women will turn up as the camp is still ongoing.

Daniel Chilomo, Spokesperson for John Chilembwe district hospital, says “the camp has helped the hospital reduce the number of patients on their waiting list as well as learn expertise from the foreign doctors.”

Chilomo, has since advised the treated women to publicize their assistance so as to remove fear in their fellow women with the condition.
