MACRA Sensitises Stakeholders on Central Equipment Identification Registry

Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority MACRA has said is making positive strides in the implementation of Central Equipment Identification Registry CEIR which will register all gadgets and Sim cards to protect people from fraud.

Director General of MACRA Daud Suleman said this during mobile money fraud prevention task force meeting with mobile service providers Airtel and TNM as well as Zomba Prison among others in Mangochi.

According to Suleman, MACRA has so far they have connected the system to Airtel and TNM networks and completed consultations on Sim cards Regulations.

He said the authority is working on five new laws that provide proper legal protection to Malawians digitally

Suleman pleaded with people not to be alarmed by the system because is different from spying machine as the CEIR is only meant to serve Malawians not harm them

In his remarks chairperson for mobile money fraud prevention task force, Khumbo Phiri said, it is a good development because the system will enhance the arrest of culprits and reduction of scammers

Phiri explained that before introduction of CEIR, fraudsters were able to destroy sim cards without being caught but now the registry will be identifying the gadgets and sim cards thereby protecting Malawians in digital space.
