Civil Servants Trade Union asks 35% salary increment

Civil Servants Trade Union has asked for a 35% salary increment in the 2023/2024 financial year which starts on 1st April.

Speaking in an interview with Radio Islam, CSTU secretary general, Charles Kumchenga, says this is due to rising cost of living caused by harsh economic environment.

Kumchenga, says, they have been in discussion with Government Negotiating Team GNT where they also proposed for a 25% increment on leave grant.

According to Kumchenga the GNT assured them that the matter has been taken to treasury for action.

In the 2022/2023 fiscal year CSTU had proposed a 30% increment but government gave them a 12% average.

However, speaking during a pre-budget consultation meeting in Blantyre last month minister of finance Sosten Gwengwe said wages are among the things that consume a big chunk of recurrent budget.
