FAWEMA Organizes go back to school Symposium

As one way of promoting girls education in the country, the Forum for African Women Educationalist in Malawi (FAWEMA) says it is committed to withdraw from marriages, young girls who dropped out of school due to forced early marriages.

FAWEMA Executive Director, Hendrina Givah was speaking on the sidelines of a four day girls’ camp held in Lilongwe, under the theme “ More Educated Girls: Reducing Teenage Pregnancies in Malawi.

Givah expressed concern over increased number of girls who drop out of school, as well as increased number of defilement cases.

She further appealed to other organizations which fight for girls’ rights and education, to put much emphasis in promoting girls education which will in turn reduce early marriages and teenage pregnancies.

Meanwhile, FAWEMA has called for strong punitive measures towards teachers who sexually assault young girls.

One the participant at the camp, Getrude Kaipa from Ntcheu-Bangala school has meanwhile encouraged her fellow young girls to remain in schools.

FAWEMA is supporting both primary and secondary school students in six districts in the country including Mchinji and Ntcheu.
