Marine boat carrying ESCOM, Police officers capsize in Shire River

A Malawi Police Service marine boat carrying ESCOM, police officers and villagers capsized in Shire River in Chikwawa district

According to ESCOM management the boat with 10 passengers capsized in the evening when the officers were returning from a site where they were repairing ESCOM infrastructure that tropical cyclone Ana damaged recently

The boat they were travelling in got trapped by an external object and rescue efforts were hampered by a sudden surge in water levels due to heavy rains

Meanwhile most of the passengers who were in the boat have been rescued and are in good health but some are missing

ESCOM management has since intensified search and rescue efforts using marine police boats and Malawi airforce helicopter

ESCOM urges the public to remain calm while the rescue efforts continue.
