MAM bails out Salima stormy rains victims

Families affected by heavy rains and hailstorms in Salima district say are still recovering from wounds and trauma they went through on that night.

Over 200 families have been left homeless after heavy rains accompanied by hailstorm blew off their houses in the area of Traditional Authority Kalonga in the district.

Speaking after Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) distributed 200 bags of maize to the devastated families, one of the victims, Fatima Phiri, of Chisani Village in the area, said since that day her family has been struggling to make ends meet.

Phiri narrated that her house and all her belongings were destroyed and are now living in a very destitute life.

“On that night, she spent the whole night in an open ground with her five children while rains were pouring heavily,” Phiri

On his part, Village Headman Sitima commended MAM for the gesture saying it has come at a rights time.

He however called on all well-wishers to come and assist the people with materials which they can build the temporary shelters.

Speaking earlier, MAM District chairperson, Sheikh Ibrahim White, they decided to distribute bags of maize as a relief to the affected families.

Sheikh White “we have reached to families regardless of the religion as the MAM understand that the storm did not affected based on the religion.”

The district chair therefore advised the beneficiaries to share little they have received to others so that they may have something to eat.

He also urged them not to sell but use to its intended purpose.
