Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique discuss Nacala Development Corridor

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), in collaboration with Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Mozambican Revenue Authority (MRA), has commenced a two-week Nacala Development Corridor Tripartite Customs Cluster Workshop in Lilongwe.

This first-of-its-kind meeting aims to enhance trade facilitation by improving data sharing and streamlining customs procedures among the three nations, with a particular focus on integrating Mozambique into One-Stop Border Post (OSBP) framework.

Currently, Zambia and Malawi are actively sharing customs data under this arrangement and this workshop seeks to extend the collaboration to Mozambique.

Speaking at the event, Cornelius Kakweza, Commissioner of Customs and Excise at MRA, highlighted the importance of this initiative in simplifying trade processes.

Kakweza stated that this workshop is all about making trade easier along the Nacala Corridor adding by streamlining procedures, traders will have clear guidance on what to expect at border crossings, including costs and requirements

Representing Mozambique, Osvaldo Correia, Leader of Mozambican delegation, emphasized the benefits of closer cooperation.

Correia noted “Malawi shares four border posts with Mozambique and this workshop will help us share information and improve collaboration, ultimately simplifying trade operations between our countries.

Zambia’s Mazuba Simalabbe echoed similar sentiments, stressing that Malawi and Zambia already have a strong working relationship and expressing optimism that Mozambique will soon be fully integrated into the system.

This tripartite initiative marks a significant step towards regional trade efficiency, economic cooperation, and stronger diplomatic ties, ensuring smoother cross-border trade for businesses and traders across Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique.

The data sharing initiative is being supported with funding from World Bank through the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.
